The Safari Tour Vipingo leg is set for an exciting finish as three players- Mutahi Kibugu, Greg Snow and Ugandan Ronald Rugumayo- are tied at the top on four over par after today’s high-scoring penultimate round.
The Vipingo course proved too tough for the pros as only one player-Rugumayo- shot under par as 36-hole co-leaders Snow and Daniel Nduva returned high scores of 76 and 77 respectively to open the window for the chasing pack.
Rugumayo seized the opportunity with a priceless 71 round today headlined by six birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey to move up five places in his pursuit for a first win on the Tour. The Ugandan is in good company of Kibugu who has been climbing steadily up the leaderboard and is now in pole position after a modest 73 round which was blighted by three bogeys.
Snow, who has been at the top all week, will be counting on experience tomorrow to shake off the competition after today’s poor outing eroded the advantage he’d enjoyed since the tournament start. The short holes seem to be the Muthaiga player’s achilles heels evidenced by the four shots dropped in today’s round.
In one of the most open final day contests on the Tour, the race seems wide open with all the players in the top 10 standing a realistic chance of claiming the Kshs 330,000 top prize money. Foreigners Robson Chinhoi and Nyasha Muyambo are comfortably placed in the top 5 and will be relishing at the second opportunity to rain on the locals’ parade. Veteran Dismas Indiza, six shots behind in position T7, will be hoping to kick-start the season with a rare win.
