Njoroge Kibugu finished in a respectable third position at the All-Africa Junior Golf Championships after posting three over 75 in the final round at the Palm Hills Golf Course in Cairo.
Kibugu had a relatively poor front nine where he dropped four shots after bogeying four holes. A late recovery on the back nine where he birdied two holes ensured he kept his place on the podium behind Zimbabwe’s Michael Wallace and outright leader Pascal Gunther of South Africa. Gunther completed a wire-to-wire performance despite carding two over 74 today, thanks to the opening day unassailable six under 66 round.
Team Kenya held on to finish fourth on +75 gross, a whopping 76 shots behind leaders South Africa who retained the crown for the 22nd consecutive time. Team Morocco fended off a late rally from Team Zimbabwe to clinch the remaining ticket to the annual Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan.
In the girls’ category Team South Africa successfully defended her title after posting an impressive -9 gross, 10 better than second placed Morocco for a fourth straight victory. Team Kenya finished a distant fifth on +111. Alyssa Jamal, the team’s star player, carded +53 gross to finish 12th overall while Belinda Wanjiru finished 13th after shooting +65. Bianca Ngecu finished 17th on +69 gross in the field of 27 girls from nine countries.
The annual 72-hole strokeplay competition brings together top amateurs on the continent below the age of 18 years. The winning boys team and runners-up, plus the winning girls team qualify for the annual Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan. The team score comprises of the best three results per round for boys while the girls’ category uses the top two scores.
