Kenya unveils team to All Africa Junior Championship

Kenya will be represented by a new-look team at this year’s All Africa Junior Team Championship after the Junior Golf Foundation, JGF, named five fresh faces to the annual event.

Apart from Krish Shah and Belinda Wanjiru who represented the country in Egypt last year, Lee Kimathi, Mikael Kihara and Junaid Manji will make up the boys’ team while Chanelle Wangari and Audrey Gachora will take part in the girls’ competition scheduled for 15th to 21st April, 2023 at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, Uganda.

The four-day tournament brings together junior golfers under the age of 18 years in a team competition made up of the best three results per round for boys while the girls’ category uses the top two scores. Last year the boys team made up of Njoroge Kibugu, Andrew Wahome, Elvis Muigua and Shah finished fourth on +75 gross behind leaders South Africa while the girls team comprising of Wanjiru, Bianca Ngecu and Alyssa Jamal finished fifth on +111.

The team heading to Uganda was selected based on the players’ performance at the just-concluded Muthaiga Open where the top 12 boys and top 8 girls from the JGF Order of Merit were invited to compete alongside the country’s elite amateurs. Kimathi emerged top in the boys’ category with an aggregate of 235 gross while Wangari led the girls with a score of 239 gross.

The top juniors have been undergoing intensive training under coaches John Van Liefland and Alfred Nandwa in the Nairobi Region and Saleem Haji in the Coast Region.
